This children’s hospital was built upon a pledge of love. Established in 1884, it was, in fact, built by Russian philanthropist Giovanni Meyer as a tribute to his wife who died young and had expressed the wish that a children’s hospital be given to the city of Florence. The man, although he was a top-level financial expert, abandoned all his other projects out of an act of love to attach his name to this hospital, which is now worldwide renowned.
