A landmark for medical training and healthcare in Florence, this polyclinic stands on 78 hectares of land at the foot of the Careggi hill. Since the 1990s it has been recognized as the largest university hospital in Central Italy. Originally, its name derives from the Latin term campus regi, or “king's field”. In fact, it was a property of the Medici family. Although building work started in 1912, the real development of this structure took place during the advent of Fascism and the Second World War (which put it to the test). The new entrance was inaugurated in 2010, a great work of contemporary architecture which features an extensive use of glass, symbolic of the hospital’s rebirth. A tram stop is located just opposite.
