Surrounded as it is by tall trees, this great renaissance villa, just steps away from the car park of the Careggi Hospital, often goes unnoticed. This is, however, the villa where one of the most illustrious Florentines of all times, Lorenzo the Magnificent, was born and died, and where the philosopher Marsilio Ficino wrote his De vita, perhaps after a chat with his “colleague” Pico della Mirandola or poet Poliziano. In this villa, in fact, Cosimo the Elder, after having commissioned some works to Michelozzo, founded his Neoplatonic Academy, the greatest philosophical school of Italian Humanism. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the villa was taken over by Regione Toscana in 2013 and is currently closed to the public for major restoration works.
