Opened in 1882, following the Italian Jew’s Emancipation in 1861 to coincide with the proclamation of Italy Unification, the Synagogue of Florence is a landmark for the city’s Jewish community. The building represents an example of exotic style, which is visible from the imposing façade with its white travertine pink limestone cladding, the copper-clad central dome and the towers on either side. Inside, the walls are painted with arabesques with gold highlights and geometrical motifs. It also houses the Jewish Museum, in which cult objects are preserved, the ‘Room of Memory’ dedicated to the Shoah and the ‘Immersive Room’ where one can retrace the construction of the Synagogue with an experiential narrative.
