We are in Soffiano Alta, on a small hill, in the past considered the ideal place to build fortifications. Built in Romanesque style, the Church of Santa Maria a Soffiano was the Lambardi family castle rectory until the 14th century, when it then passed to other powerful Florentine families (including the Strozzi and the Albizzi). The interior houses valuable 14th century frescoes such as Stories of the Baptist. Next to the church is the old castle’s Torre dei Lambardi, which in the 1800s replaced the old bell gable.
