Church of Sant'Angelo a Legnaia

Ancient and modern, one next to the other ... or rather one inside the other. The ancient church of Sant'Angelo a Legnaia had become too cramped, so to speak, and at the beginning of the 1980s, with an almost Anglo-Saxon attitude, it 'multiplied', thus maintaining a constant dialogue between ancient and modern. In fact, very little remained of the ancient church, dating back to the 11th century, just the altarpiece by Baroque artist Francesco Curradi, and some paintings by Mariotto di Nardo and Bicci di Lorenzo which are now in storage. The new church with an almost circular plan was designed by the Bonini-Bonanni-Torrini team of architects. An extraordinary discovery in 2020 was the attribution of one of the crucifixes to Donatello, now preserved in the Oratory adjacent to the church.
