Although the structure we see today - officially called the New Hospital of San Giovanni di Dio, but known to all as the Torregalli Hospital given the proximity to the Castle of Torre Galli, dates from 1982, its history has its roots in the 15th century. “New“ because it is the new seat of the much older hospital of San Giovanni di Dio in Borgo Ognissanti, a hospital founded by the powerful Vespucci family and financed by Simone di Piero (great- uncle of Amerigo Vespucci). Only in the 1960s, due to the famous flood, was it decided to create a new, more efficient structure for modern-day needs.
