Everything here oozes charm: the history, the collection, the place. But let’s proceed in order: Frederick Stibbert (1838-1906), a British citizen born to a Tuscan mother, restored Villa Montughi to transform it into a museum for his eclectic antiques collection. Upon his death, the villa, park and art collections were donated to the city of Florence. The museum’s most impressive section is the arms and armour collection: a parade of Italian, German and Turkish-Ottoman knights on horseback dating back to the 1500s and 1600s, pieces of the 16th and 17th-century Indian collection and a Japanese collection, the largest one outside of Japan, including katana swords and armour which belonged to the last Samurai. Among the paintings are works by Sandro Botticelli, Luca Giordano, Alessandro Allori, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Neri di Bicci and Pietro Lorenzetti.
