Porta of San Niccolò (also known as Torre di San Niccolò/ Tower of S. Niccolò) located in the homonymous district in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, was built in 1324 to defend the Oltrarno. During the demolition of the ancient city walls, Giuseppe Poggi, the architect responsible for the demolition and construction of the ring road, decided not to destroy it, making it the only city tower to have retained its original height. The entrance hall contains a 15th-century fresco depicting the Madonna and Child between St. John the Baptist (patron saint of Florence) and St. Nicholas of Bari (protector of the adjacent district).
