Basilica of Santa Croce

Basilica of Santa Croce, built to the design by Arnolfo di Cambio, is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Various illustrious people, such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini, Foscolo and Alfieri, are buried inside. The church is famous for its impressive marble façade, decorated with typical Gothic details, and for the frescoes that adorn its interior, including those by Giotto and his school. Inside there are also works by Donatello (the Annunciation and the Crucifix) and Cimabue's Crucifix, damaged in the 1966 flood of the Arno.
