Piazza Santa Croce, as we know it today, was created in the 13th century during the reconstruction of the Basilica di Santa Croce ordered by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1295. The square was gradually expanded around the basilica, becoming one of the main meeting places in Florence, as well as a popular spot for public events, markets and festivals. Here there stands the monument dedicated to Dante Alighieri by Enrico Pazzi. Every year in June it is transformed to host the matches of the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, one of the most authentic and evocative moments for the citizens of Florence.
