Two valuable works remain from the old church, a Giottoesque Madonna with Child by Giovanni da Milano and a Deposition by Michelangelo's childhood friend Francesco Granacci. The church of San Bartolomeo in Tuto in Scandicci was considered a safe harbour for the people of the valley subject to flooding and for this reason it was called in Tuto, which means "protection". So also the very modern church (built between 1974 and '93) which replaced it, has kept the name and the sense of security, with an octagonal interior protected by a powerful "shell" in reinforced concrete on the outside.
