Piazza dell'Indipendenza

A large square in the center of Florence surrounded by many 19th – early 20th century middle class homes. Its name originates from the insurrection (organized by Garibaldi’s National Society) which took place in the mid-19th century and which led to the flight of Grand Duke Leopold II. In the early 1900s, this was an agricultural area called "Orto di Barbaro".
