This church was built in 1322 to commemorate the victory of the Guelphs of Florence in a battle that took place on 11 June 1289, the feast day of St Barnabas. Over the years it has housed many different monastic orders, such as Augustinians and Carmelites. It contains a great deal of pictorial decoration, which includes stuccos, frescoes and glazed polychrome terracotta. The splendid San Barnaba Altarpiece by Sandro Botticelli (1487), once on the altar of this church, is now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery.
