This Gate was part of Florence’s last (starting from the center out) circle of walls and dates back to the 1300s. Surprisingly enough, the Gate owes its name not to the fact that it led towards the town of Faenza in Romagna, but to the convent of the nuns of Faenza, which was demolished in 1534 to make room for the Fortezza da Basso. The Gate was then incorporated into the fortress built by Alessandro de' Medici and rediscovered during restoration works carried out during the 1970s and 1980s.
