Giardino dei Giusti

Established in 2003 by the City of Florence, Giardino dei Giusti is in a portion of Orti del Parnaso, within the Garden of Horticulture. Inspired by Giardino dei Giusti in Jerusalem, it is a place dedicated to the memory of the people who fought in defense of human rights against genocide, totalitarianism and violence. In the highest area there is a carob tree dedicated to the memory of Chico Mendes, a Brazilian activist who lost his life protecting the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, and a lagerstroemia planted in honor of cyclist Gino Bartali, who saved some persecuted Jews during the Nazi-Fascist occupation
