Few people imagine that the large 14th century Tree of Life panel, as rare as it is among the best described, admired by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year to the Accademia, was originally housed in the church of San Piero a Monticelli.
Endowed with a thousand-year history (records date it back to 1051, when it was among the assets of the Benedictine Abbey of Sant'Antimo), this church is famous for having housed two saints, St. Catherine of Siena and St. Catherine de Ricci. The latter entered the convent in 1531 and it is said that she manifested her first mystical ecstasies before the Giottesque crucifix that can still be seen in the church, together with a late sixteenth-century Annunciation by a young Jacopo Ligozzi and a Last Supper.
