Did you know that “Cascine” simply means “cacio” or cattle for the production of cheese and butter.? And that already in the 1800s it was completely crossed by the tram? This vast area of 160 hectares, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1563 as a farm and hunting estate, gradually became a place of entertainment and Sunday outings under the Hapsburg-Lorraines. The 3 and 1/2 kilometres long, 700 metres wide park includes wooded areas and vast clearings.
Stop by the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, designed by Emilio Zocchi in 1890 to decorate Piazza della Repubblica, or the Pegasus Column, said to be dedicated to Elisa Queen of Etruria, sister of Napoleon. Also, do not miss the Pyramid, which was an icehouse used to store cheeses from the Grand Ducal Farm. On the right as you walk along you will also see the Visarno racecourse and in the central square, the University of Florence Faculty of Agriculture.
