“Essere alle porte co' sassi” is a Florentine saying which roughly translates to “being late”. It goes back to the Middle Ages, when Florence was surrounded with walls and could be accessed only at scheduled times when the gates of the walls were open. Most of the gates were demolished over the centuries, but Porta a Prato (one of the oldest ones, dating back to 1285) is still intact. The Gate is now listed as a monumental building to be considered national artistic and cultural heritage. The name, unlike what is commonly believed, does not derive from the road leading to Prato, but from the square opposite the Gate called “Il Prato”.
