Botanical Garden or Giardino dei Semplici is the third oldest botanical garden in the world, established as a garden of medicinal plants at the behest of Cosimo I de' Medici in 1545. Today, there are about 4000 potted plants inside two large greenhouses, one cold and one warm. In addition, there are ancient, so-called ‘monumental’ trees such as Micheli’s Tasso planted in 1720, two enormous zelkova plants, a cork tree planted in 1810 and a Montezuma cypress.
