National Archaeological Museum in Florence is one of the most ancient and important archaeological museums in Italy. Founded in 1870 as the Etruscan Museum, it housed several Etruscan, Greek and Roman finds from the Medici and Lorena collections, as well as a large section of Egyptian artefacts. Today the museum is composed of the Etruscan Section, the Roman Section, the Greek Section, the Egyptian Section (a gathering of artifacts second only to the collection in Turin), the Numismatic Section and others. Among the best-known pieces there is the Chimera, an Etruscan votive sculpture representing an animal that is part lion, part goat and part snake, discovered in Arezzo in the 16th century.
