Basilica of San Marco

Basilica of San Marco is one of the most important churches in the historical centre of Florence. Facing the homonymous square, it was founded in the 13th century and restored in the 15th century at the behest of Cosimo Il Vecchio de’ Medici, who entrusted the work to Michelozzo. The Basilica was part of the convent complex of San Marco, where Cosimo the Elder, Beato Angelico and Girolamo Savonarola lived. Since 1934, for several years it housed the mayor of Florence, Giorgio La Pira.
