Located on Piazza della Libertà, this Gate was built back in 1285 and shows a plaque referring to the tormented love story between Frederick IV- the future King of Denmark and Norway- and the aristocratic Maria Maddalena Trenta. The romance came to an abrupt end because of the difference in rank and religion (he was Lutheran, she was Catholic). He married Louise of Mecklenburg-Güstrow and the girl entered an enclosed nunnery, where Frederick was able to see her again some years later. Nobody knows what they said to each other, but the King’s eyes were certainly “moist with tears” as he exited the nunnery. Standing at each side of the Gate are two magnificent stone “Marzocchi”, lion statues symbol of the Guelph party.
