Porta San Frediano

The Gate is located in the Oltrarno area. The year it was built (1333), it was the most imposing of all the gates along the circle of walls. It was lowered in 1529, during the siege to Florence by Charles V, probably because its original height made the cannon attacks too dangerous. There is an interesting Florentine legend associated with a pietra serena tile engraved with a coat of arms, which can be seen as you enter the San Frediano neighborhood: the story has it that, following the defeat of Pisa ( in 1364), the prisoners were conducted through the Gate and forced to kiss the backside of a baby lion. The resentment between Pisan and Florentines was so strong that, although the Gate led to Pisa, Florentines named it after the neighborhood. And “commemorated” the Pisans with this bizarre plaque.
