Orti Oricellari Garden

An enchanting garden, well-hidden and a stone's throw from Santa Maria Novella railway station, created in the 15th century at the behest of Bernardo Rucellai and Nannina, sister of Lorenzo the Magnificent. This garden, unknown to most, boasts a great past and illustrious personalities such as Niccolò Machiavelli and the future Pope Leo X were guests here. At the end of 1500s it was acquired and restored to its former splendour by Bianca Cappello, first mistress and then wife of  Grand Duke Francesco dei Medici, and then in the 1800s remodelled by Giuseppe Poggi. Today, it is an oasis of calm protected by high walls along the street of the same name. The gigantic statue of Polyphemus drinking from a wineskin, the Grotto of Nymphs and the Winds and the Temple of Flora are all noteworthy. Entrance to the garden is free, but by appointment only.
