The bridge connects the districts of Peretola and Isolotto. Its name derives from a very particular story: in 1870 the Indian prince Rajaram Chuttraputti of Kolhapur, returning from London, visited Florence, but was struck by a sudden illness and died at the age of only 21. To respect Hindu traditions, he was cremated and his ashes were scattered at the confluence of the two rivers (Arno and Mugnone). The event struck the Florentines of the time to such an extent that a monument was erected in his honour, and, in addition to the bridge, also a building nearby, a former nineteenth-century café now home to one of Virgilio Sieni's workshops, was named after the young man.
