Located at the east end of the Cascine Park is a small, Oriental-style and dome-like monument, the work of British sculptor Carlo Francesco Fuller. It was built in 1870, when the young Indian Prince Rajaram Chuttraputti of Kolhapur died while staying in Florence. The funeral ceremony which, according to the Hindu rite, involved cremation and the scattering of ashes in the river, attracted a crowd of Florentine onlookers, and the site was forever associated with the “Indian”, after whom the nearby viaduct and building, now housing the Virgilio Sieni cultural center, were also named. The monument’s base features an inscription translated into four languages: Italian, English, Hindi and Punjabi.
