English Cemetery

English Cemetery, located in Piazzale Donatello between viale Gramsci and viale Don Minzoni, was inaugurated in 1828 to accommodate the burials of non-Catholics and non-Jews, who until then could only be buried in the city of Livorno, in Tuscany. Designed by Swiss architect Carlo Reishammer, it houses 1409 tombs of literary men, artists and merchants from 16 different nations, including the English poet Elizabeth Barret Browning and the writer Jean Pierre Vieusseux. Closed in 1877, it soon became a symbolic place that tells the story of cosmopolitan Florence in the nineteenth century.
