Anthropology and Ethnology Museum at the University of Florence is an ethnological museum that preserves and hands down the cultures of the world’s people. Founded in 1869 thanks to the anthropologist Paolo Mantegazza, the museum consists of 18 exhibition rooms containing around 25,000 artefacts from all over the world. The ancient pieces date back to the 16th and 17th centuries and come from the Medici family and their interest in objects from the New World. Among the exhibits are weapons, furniture, books, paintings, clothes from the Ainu of Hokkaidō, artefacts from the Amazon peoples, Maori boats and African amulets.
