Florence’s airport, named after the famous Florentine navigator Amerigo Vespucci, is located in the Peretola area, in the north-west of downtown Florence, where Vespucci was born, just 6 km away from the Duomo as the crow flies. It was inaugurated in 1931. In the 1980s, the runway was lengthened (from 1,000 to 1,400 meters), but the airport was upgraded only in 1996 by further lengthening the runway and building modern facilities to accommodate larger national and international aircraft. In 2021, the runway underwent renovation again to facilitate the airport’s flow of passengers and freight. Plans are for the construction of a new 2,400-meter runway to be operational by 2026.
