Officially named the "Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the University of Florence" in 1936, its roots date back to the immediate post-Union of Italy period, when Tuscany was mainly founded on agriculture. Since the early 20th century, the Agricultural School for Women, as well as the Committee for Colonial Agricultural Education and the schools of the Forestry Institute have also been located in the current premises, namely the large Palazzina Reale in the Cascine, a Grand Ducal Farm established in the late 18th century at the behest of Pietro Leopoldo of Hapsburg-Lorraine.
