This very old square already existed in the 10th century. Its current name dates back to 1882 and was intended to celebrate the recently achieved political unity of Italy.
It was on that occasion that the obelisk by Giovanni Pini, placed in the center and dedicated to the fallen in the three wars of Independence was inaugurated. Precisely for this important historical significance, commemoration ceremonies are held in this square and wreaths are placed at the war memorial every year, on November 4th and April 25th.
An interesting fact: during the Napoleonic era, a guillotine, called “the Widow” by the Florentines, stood in the place of the obelisk.
