The present dimensions of the church are the result of expansion and restoration work carried out over the years. The foundations, which date back to before the year 1000, stand on the remains of an ancient Roman settlement. The origin of the name "in Pane" is uncertain, however, over time it has been called by many different names such as "di Rifredi", "alle Panche" and even "Santo Stefano tra l'Arcora". The church houses many works of art that deserve to be seen, such as the Crucifix hanging on the central altar and dating back to the school of Giotto.
