Church of San Pietro a Varlungo has very ancient origins, dating back to before the year 1000. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, it underwent numerous renovations, which led to the demolition of the portico and the construction of a bell tower. During World War II the church was one of the main places of relief for persecuted Jews in Florence, a fact that made the parish priest and vice-parish priest of that time, Don Leto Casini and Don Giovanni Simoni, worthy to be recognized among ‘the Righteous Among the Nations’.
