Built in Neo-Romanesque style, its name comes from the typically Florentine version of the name Giacomo (Jacopo), in English, James. The addition of the diminutive “ino” was designed to distinguish it from the other churches of the same name in the city. Originally there was another 13th church (formerly called "San Jacopo della Burella") on the site, which contained the much venerated image of the Crucifix with the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist. Due to the increase in population, in the 1930s the walls were demolished and the current church was designed by architect Severino Crott and later consecrated by Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa.
