Not far from the Fortezza da Basso there is a small corner of Russia that should absolutely not be missed. This beautiful church with its typical onion domes, built between the 19th and 20th centuries at the behest of the daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, was the first Russian Orthodox church to be built in Italy. Generous contributors to its completion were the Demidoffs, a Russian family who loved to spend periods of time in Florence, where they bought wonders such as Villa Demidoff in the Novoli area and the former Medici villa in Pratolino, in whose garden there is the amazing Colossus of the Apennines by Giambologna. Although the murals and icons that adorn the interior were painted by Russian artists, the masonry works, carvings of the iconostases, mosaics and the majolica decorations are the work of Italian craftsmen. A magnificent cycle of wall paintings in Russian 'art nouveau' style adorns the interior of the upper church, which is dedicated to the Nativity of Christ (while the lower church is dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker).
