Located in the sprawling, lively Rifredi neighbourhood in the north-westerly area of Florence, the theatre was built in 1913 but burned down in the 1920s and transformed into a local branch of the National Fascist Party. Real theatrical activity began only in the late Sixties, when it became a kind of social centre for young people, managed by the budding Giancattivi comic trio (Alessandro Benvenuti, Athina Cenci and Paolo Nativi, later replaced by Franco Di Francescantonio , and still later by Francesco Nuti) . In 2015, as a result of the consistently high quality productions by Pupi and Fresedde, its permanent theatrical company from the 1980s onwards, the theatre was recognized as a National Theatre Production Center.
